I have indeed done the archetypal British student thing of backpacking around Europe although I have to admit to having cheating a little bit when I did my particular trip because when we ended up in Italy, I made sure that I booked dorm rooms ahead of us getting there. Well, we had had enough scary experiences trying to find somewhere to sleep in Austria and Germany, so I got us all booked in Rooms With A View when we arrived in Frascati.
I felt sorry for my girlfriend at times during this trip!
